Have fun and win one of 4 prizes available! IEC, ISO and ITU are organizing a video competition to raise awareness of the importance of standards in our daily life. The best video will be awarded 1,500 Swiss francs, with the three runner-ups each receiving 500 Swiss francs.
Your challenge is to imagine a world without international standards. Picture it, life would be much more complicated and precarious! For example, it would be much harder for countries to exchange goods and services or just communicate reliably. We would think twice before shopping online or taking money out of the bank if products and services did not conform to trusted international standards for quality, safety, security and more.
Now focus on just one example of something that would not work or would be less trustworthy if we didn’t have international standards. Get your friends, family, and colleagues to help you and capture this on video, and that’s it! Share it with us, and you may be our winner.
Hold on, it can’t be that easy
The aim of this competition is to get you thinking about international standards, because they often go unnoticed behind the scenes, but most importantly, we want you to have fun while doing this.
Rule 1 – 15 seconds max please.
Focus on just one short example of something that doesn’t work or would be less trustworthy without standards. Bonus, if it’s just 15 seconds you can post it on Instagram too.
Rule 2 – Add the clip. Don’t forget to add the clip. This clip.
All videos in the World Standards Day (WSD for short) competition should include this clip which shows the WSD message and the logos of the 3 organizations that are participating. The total running time of your video, including the clip, should no more than 15 seconds.
Rule 3 – Upload your video on YouTube, and tweet, instapost, facemessage us with the hashtag #speakstandards
All video submissions must be uploaded on YouTube (make sure it’s not set to private), and the link shared on social media with the hashtag #speakstandards, because, well, we live in a hashtag obsessed world. You can either tweet the link to the video, message us on our Facebook page or Instagram it, just don’t forget to tag your message or we won’t find it.
Rule 4 – Well, this is just a summary of the main points. The full details of how to participate are here.
Now, the important stuff, how do you win?
How will my video be judged?
The three organizers of the competition, IEC, ISO and ITU, will get together and select the top 10 favorite videos based on:
- Relevance: does your video really show an example of something that would not work or would be less trustworthy without standards?
- Understanding: do you understand the impact of standards developed by IEC, ISO, ITU on our lives?
- Creativity and originality: we are looking for a variety of examples, so you will have more chance if you are not doing the same as everyone else
- Meet all the rules mentioned above, and comply with the conditions here.
Don’t be afraid to have a sense of humour when making your contribution, we like to laugh. And of course, quality – although we don’t expect a cinematographic result, every little helps.
Once we have selected our top 10 favorites, we will put them up for vote on our social media channels, and then it will be up to the public to decide!
Keep an eye out for the deadline or you may miss out on the prize. All videos must be uploaded and the link (with hashtag) sent to us before 22 August 2016. So what are you waiting for? Start creating!
Here are some examples where standards are vital. Please check the standards catalogue of IEC, ISO and ITU for more ideas: Remember that creativity and originality are part of the criteria so try to think outside the box!
What will we do with these videos?
Once the competition is over, we will select our favorite moments among all the submissions we receive and we will put them together in a mashup compilation to be shared during World Standards Day (14 October) to raise awareness about the importance of standards. To all participants, thank you for being part of this exciting adventure.
